Overseas trained doctors form an essential part of the Australian medical workforce, particularly in meeting medical workforce shortages in rural areas, the public hospital system and some specialist disciplines.To enable overseas trained doctors to enter the Australian workforce, a series of processes has been developed to assess and recognise qualifications and skills acquired overseas. These processes have been developed to determine an applicant's educational and occupational standing within Australia.
In line with assessment and recognition processes developed for other professions, there are several steps that must be completed by overseas trained doctors to gain general registration in Australia.
The steps are:
Step 1:
Pass an English language proficiency test -

Obtain conditional registration from the relevant medical board
